SILENT AUCTION: 11:00 AM – 12:45 PM

Support your industry by bidding on a wide variety of auction items, ranging from equipment and supplies to vacation packages, computers, TVs and more! These auctions are a major funding source for Concrete Industry Management programs at five public universities. Learn more at

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program has developed into a key resource for populating the concrete industry with talented individuals with college degrees. Five universities strategically placed across the country offer four-year degrees in CIM.

Today, there are more than 1,000 graduates of the program and another 500 students currently enrolled. This program is made possible, in large part, by the combined efforts of the national and local concrete industry. The National Steering Committee (NSC) for CIM, in collaboration with local patron groups at all five universities, provides both funding and oversight for the program.

The CIM Auction benefits these Universities:

Monday, January 22   2:30 PM

Three students from each Concrete Industry Management Program have been invited to present: California State University – Chico, Middle Tennessee State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, South Dakota State University, and Texas State University.

World of Concrete registrants are invited to attend the presentation competition and meet students following the formal program. Each presentation will reflect student’s individual experiences in research activities, internships, or capstone coursework and how lessons learned will impact student’s career in the concrete industry. Past presentation topics included: “What CIM Can Do for You”; “Concrete Industry Management Program: Internships”; “Research Project: Investigation of Sulfur Concrete Mixes for Mars Infrastructure”.

Judges for the presentations are key industry leaders. The student who is judged to have prepared the best presentation will receive recognition as the 2024 recipient of the Bob Weatherton Award and $2500 scholarship money.

Presentations Highlight CIM Goals

Students in the The Concrete Industry Management program earn a four-year Bachelor of Science degree designed to fast-track their initial career opportunities within the concrete industry, the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) has. More than 1,000 graduates are employed in the concrete industry, many in key leadership positions.

Honoring an Industry Legend

World of Concrete established this student award in honor of “Big Bob” Weatherton. Weatherton, who died in 2016, had been closely associated with the founding of World of Concrete, being named an industry legend in 2015. Weatherton revolutionized the concrete pumping industry by developing the articulating boom arm for concrete pumps, which allowed boom trucks with long reaches to travel easily to jobsites. Weatherton was a catalyst of change supporting concrete, producers, and design professionals – his contributions to the concrete industry serve as a motivating example for all CIM students.

Quality in Concrete Slabs Luncheon & Forum

[WESOG] Wednesday, January 24 • 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Hosted by World of Concrete 360 and American Society of Concrete Contractors.

Direct questions to Bill Palmer at [email protected] or 773-494-4619.

Innovations in Concrete Slab Construction– True Innovation doesn’t come easily in our business. But the four experts on this panel can tell you what’s new, and what works and what doesn’t. Each presenter will make a short presentation about one aspect of slab construction, then attendees will have the chance to ask questions about anything related to concrete floors.

Laser scanners, certainly have value on a project, but do they help contractors or put them at risk? Jonathan Matson will discuss. High tolerance floors are making a comeback, and Bryan Birdwell will be there to tell us about the opportunities and challenges. Greg Fricks knows more about high-quality floors than anyone, he builds a lot of them. And Scott Tarr, author of PCA’s Concrete Floors on Ground and ASCC’s Guide to the Design and Construction of Concrete Toppings, will discuss how contractors and designers can work together to get a more constructable design to allow the contractor to be more productive.

Questions to be addressed:

-  Can a laser scanner be used to measure FF/FL for high tolerance floors?

-  How can a slab contractor work with designers to get highly constructible slab designs?

-  What does a contractor need to know before building a high-tolerance floor?

-   What new equipment and techniques are available in slab construction?

Luncheon host Bill Palmer will moderate peer-to-peer discussions and introduce these industry experts who will address your questions regarding best steps for contractors to efficiently deliver a high-quality slab.

Concrete Slabs Panelists:
Scott Tarr, North S.Tarr Concrete Consulting, Dover, NH
Bryan Birdwell, Structural Services Incorporated, Waxahachie, TX
