WOC's Commitment to Sustainability

Shaping the Concrete Industry for a Sustainable Future.

We know that sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Running World of Concrete gives us many opportunities to improve our impact environmentally, socially and economically in the regions we operate.

World of Concrete is evolving and will play a role in helping the market improve its own sustainability. We do this through connecting people with networks and knowledge to help solve the big challenges in our industry.

Energy

We minimize energy use by reducing the lights, power and HVAC during move-in and move-out times in exhibit halls to reduce our event's carbon emissions from the venue  energy use and to help us create Net Zero Carbon events, utilizing renewable electricity for WOC 2022 and beyond.

Exhibitor Service Manuals

ESMs are only available electronically via our website.

Booth Furnishings & Carpet

We make use of pre-cut to length table top vinyl, reusable drapery, wooden tables, and biodegradable trash can liners. All carpet, padding, and plastic covering used contain recycled content and are recyclable.

Staff Training

Our staff is trained to properly dispose of recyclable materials and other waste.

Transportation & Equipment

We utilize natural gas forklifts and hand carts to move freight which assists in air quality.

Material Recycling

We recycle badge stock (collected from attendees at the end of the show) and scrap materials post-show.

Signs & Graphics

Whenever possible, graphics are produced from environmentally responsible components with water-based inks.

ECONOMIC IMPACT TO LAS VEGAS

The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority estimates that WOC brings in over $97 million in economic impact to the City of Las Vegas.

RECYCLE

WOC recycles an average of 80% of materials used at the show. In addition, 77 tons of brick and block was donated to Habitat Las Vegas; 51.7 tons donated to the International Masonry Training & Education Foundation; and 3 tons donated to Habitat for Humanity.

THE CIM AUCTION AT WOC

The National Steering Committee (NSC) for the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program – a business-intensive program that awards students with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management – raised close to 18 million to the CIM program in the past 18 years.

The program gives students entering the concrete work force industry experience early in their careers.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

1975-2023: More than $16 million contributed to the Industry through support of 17 leading concrete associations that are cosponsors of WOC.

THE WEATHERTON AWARD

This scholarship award was debuted at WOC 2015 to highlight the success of CIM, students from program universities, California State University (Chico), Middle Tennessee State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Texas State University, and South Dakota State University.

Each year students are invited to present their industry papers. Topics range from applied material research, studies on improving contractor efficiency, and new business development. The papers and presentations are judged by a panel of industry professionals who select the best paper/presentation. To honor these students, World of Concrete established the Bob Weatherton Award, in memory of this industry icon. The award, along with $2,500 in scholarship money, is presented each year at the show.

TREE DONATIONS TO LAS VEGAS

WOC purchased trees (80 large foliage and 80 small foliage) that were placed around the 2023 show and featured in the Sustainability Lounge that were donated to the Mayor of Las Vegas Tree Initiative to be planted locally to reduce the effects of the Heat Dome in the area at the close of the show.

The trees and plants that were donated were selected from a list of species that are drought tolerant and native to the area. Messaging was included with each tree in the planter box talking about the donation plan and featured in infographics within the Sustainability Lounge.

Printing

World of Concrete uses efficient and sustainably sourced paper to mail a limited number of event brochures using FSC certified paper. We have also transitioned from a printed onsite show program to a digital pre-show planner and onsite mobile app, converted our publication bins to digital (available through the show app and the WOC website) and moved to 100% online registration, eliminating printed onsite reg forms, and other promotional materials. WOC has also moved to a digital environment for our onsite Press Room, and other previously printed show materials.

How Our Commitment Works

1. Inspiring Sustainable Development

Our first aim is for our events to inspire sustainable development.

This is about the sustainability of the industry that our event serves. With focus on our content and partnerships, we inspire our attendees, exhibitors and event teams to deliver a sustainable event.

2. Running an Environmentally Responsible Event

Our second aim is to run our events in an environmentally responsible manner.

The key is considering how we can reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency, consideration of our energy use, waste reduction and our procurement choices.

3. Running a Socially Responsible Event

Our third aim is to run our events in a socially responsible manner.

This requires us to think about the impact we have on the local community and whether we are being a good neighbor. It also includes how we consider the welfare of everyone at our events, how we do business in an ethical and safe manner and how we promote equality and accessibility.
