Now for the first time, attendees will have the opportunity to attend three special educational events that feature actual demonstrations of the practices. These events will take place in Concrete Construction’s How-to Zone, inside a 1,600-square-foot portable facility, that will be located in the Concrete Surfaces and Decorative Pavilion.

Advances in Decorative Concrete Stenciling Monday: January 23, 2012, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Located in Concrete Construction's How-To Zone, Silver Lot, front of South Hall. $125 by 12/8/11; $155 after 12/8/11 and onsite. (This session is not part of the WOC Seminar program, and therefore not approved for continuing education hours.) Concrete stenciling has grown up. The multi-layer, registration-aligned vinyl stencil makes possible an unprecedented level of precision for multi-color designs. Along with advances in dye materials and application techniques, this technology has brought dyed, polished concrete into the realm of commercial art. This educational event will explore the use of stencils and solvent-based dyes, with a special focus on the technique of color alignment using registration marks. The instructor will explain the entire stenciling process, including surface preparation, stencil usage and dye application, and additional tips and tricks such as creating shadows to give added dimension. This session will also include the live application of a 3-dimensional design on concrete. The instructor, Rachel Bruce, is an expert in multi-layer stencils for dyeing concrete. A graphic design veteran of 15 years, Ms. Bruce expanded her horizons into decorative concrete in 2008. Her company, Floor Map Designs, designs and applies complex stencils for placing graphic art into the surface of concrete.
How to Efficiently Lay Out and Form Steps and Risers Monday: January 23, 2012, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Located in Concrete Construction's How-To-Zone, Silver Lot, front of South Hall. $125 by 12/8/11; $155 after 12/8/11 and onsite. (This session is not part of the WOC Seminar program, and therefore not approved for continuing education hours.) Efficiently building safe concrete stairs is the topic of this special session. Those who take this class will learn how to lay out and set the formwork for exterior steps, making use of some of the latest technology. This educational event will combine design theory, the use of tools and instruments to streamline the process, and some interesting tips from craftsmen who will share their secrets. The course will cover four types of steps: straight, tiered, cantilevered, and curved. Instructors are Dave Blasdel, a contractor with more than 25 years of experience, and Joe Nasvik, senior editor of Concrete Construction.

Contractor Clinics Contractor Clinics are educational presentations designed to bring concrete contractors face-to-face with suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers through live, interactive demonstrations. Exhibitors will show attendees how their product can increase productivity, improve quality, and expand their business opportunities. Each presentation will be 30 minutes long followed by a 15-minute question and answer period. Two representatives from the company staging the demonstration will be on stage during the presentation. 10th Annual Artistry in Decorative Concrete

Concrete Construction magazine’s 10th annual Artistry in Decorative Concrete Demonstration features up to 10 artisans who share their innovative techniques and real-world experiences with attendees.

Decorative Concrete Tool Demonstrations
Concrete Construction magazine’s second annual Decorative Concrete Tool Demonstration features a live action area in which attendees are invited to learn how to use new tools and accessories in decorative concrete applications. Tool demonstrations may include dry diamond polishing, hole coring, engraving, forming and others.

Concrete Polishing Area

Polishing of hardened concrete surfaces is one of the fasting growing industry segments. As more building owners and architects specify this surface treatment, contractors want to learn more about this process. The 2012 Concrete Polishing Area offers informative editorial activities to help educate contractors. Concrete Construction’s editorial team is pouring four concrete slabs that will feature three different educational programs.

Creating a Safe Polished Floor Surface

By investing in training, polishing contractors can create floor surfaces that meet the current safety standards for non-skid surfaces. In this demonstration area, attendees will learn the key element to a successful polishing project and witness an ANSI-approved test method they can use to document that the completed floor is within acceptable safety standards.


When and How to Polish a Poor Slab

Contractors may advise tear out and replacement before polishing if slabs are distressed due to poor mixes, poor workmanship, or owner abuse. This demonstration area will present test methods that allow attendees to decide what approach to take in creating a polishing surface on damaged floors. The demonstration will also feature a relatively new approach that combines overlay and polishing that can be used on some repairs.

Concrete Polishing Basics
This editorially sponsored will focus on some of the most commonly asked questions of contractors who are considering entering the concrete floor polishing industry. These questions include:

What size machine do I need to own?
How do I start the project?
Is there a particular pattern I should adopt while polishing?
