During this three-hour hands-on training session, you’ll practice what you learned in MO06 Surveying Basics I: Using Digital Total Stations. Attendees will be divided into small groups and demonstrate/practice the following: instrument setup, layout calibration setup and proper handling and care of equipment. Attendees will set-up a total station over a specific point using the 5-step method as well as learn to measure distances and horizontal and vertical (zenith) angles properly. Attendees will use angles and distances to layout a specific point. This hands-on training will help take some of the mysteries out of your everyday operations using a total station.

Title:    Hands-On Training: Surveying with Levels

Code:        TUSDL
Date/Time:    Tuesday, February 5 | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Code:        WESDL
Date/Time:    Wednesday, February 6 | 8:00 am - 11:00 am

In this three-hour hands-on training session, you’ll practice what you learned in the MO07 Surveying Basics II: Using Automatic and Digital Levels. This session is designed to introduce common surveying techniques to determine elevations on construction sites using automatic and digital levels. Attendees will level through a series of points in a looped course to demonstrate the concept of “error of closure” which will be used to determine whether or not the survey was within an acceptable range of error. Recording the leveling measurements in a standard note form will provide a calculation check of the survey and allow for determining a proportionate adjustment of minimal errors prior to using elevations found within the survey.

Through case study visuals, demonstrations and hands-on activities, participants will be exposed to key practices critical to successful spall and will gain first-hand experience the key mechanisms that cause a spall repair to fail or succeed. Mechanisms in a concrete mix that control shrinkage, rheology and bonding properties will be covered plus mechanisms that make the removal of corrosion, removal of contaminated and damaged concrete, proper surface moisture condition and surface cleanliness critical to a successful repair. Participants will gain insight into the mechanisms that affect the repair material’s bond to the existing concrete and how to test the repair’s bond.
