In this hands-on lab, participants will learn the critical aspects of surface preparation, mix design, concrete placement and quality controls relevant to repairing spalled concrete. Participants will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes and see what causes a repair to fail or succeed. This hands-on event is a great compliment to the Concrete Repair Fundamentals series – see 3-Hour Seminars TU11 and WE12.
Through case study visuals, demonstrations and hands-on activities, participants will be exposed to key practices critical to successful spall and will gain first-hand experience the key mechanisms that cause a spall repair to fail or succeed. Mechanisms in a concrete mix that control shrinkage, rheology and bonding properties will be covered plus mechanisms that make the removal of corrosion, removal of contaminated and damaged concrete, proper surface moisture condition and surface cleanliness critical to a successful repair. Participants will gain insight into the mechanisms that affect the repair material’s bond to the existing concrete and how to test the repair’s bond.
