Hands-On Training

Hands-On Training: Concrete Repair
Codes:    WECR1 / WECR2
Date/Times:    Wednesday, January 22 | 12:00 pm – 3:45 pm / 1:45 pm – 5:30 pm
Codes:    THCR1 / THCR2
Date/Times:    Thursday, January 23 | 12:00 pm – 3:45 pm / 1:45 pm – 5:30 pm

In this hands-on lab, participants will learn the critical aspects of surface preparation, mix design, concrete placement and quality controls relevant to repairing spalled concrete. Participants will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes and see what causes a repair to fail or succeed. This hands-on event is a great compliment to the Concrete Repair Fundamentals series – see 3-Hour Seminars WE12 and TH13.

Through case study visuals, demonstrations and hands-on activities, participants will be exposed to key practices critical to successful spall and will gain first-hand experience the key mechanisms that cause a spall repair to fail or succeed. Mechanisms in a concrete mix that control shrinkage, rheology and bonding properties will be covered plus mechanisms that make the removal of corrosion, removal of contaminated and damaged concrete, proper surface moisture condition and surface cleanliness critical to a successful repair. Participants will gain insight into the mechanisms that affect the repair material’s bond to the existing concrete and how to test the repair’s bond.

NOTE: Space is limited to 10 participants per time slot, so register early!

Hands-On Training: How to Place & Finish Floors
Code: TUPTD
Date/Time: Tuesday, January 21 | 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Codes:    WEPTD1 / WEPTD2
Date/Times:    Wednesday, January 22 | 8:00 am - 12:00 pm / 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This 4-hour hands-on-training session is limited to 20 attendees per time slot. Want to get dirty and learn how to place, screed, bull float and power trowel a concrete floor slab? This is not a sit and watch session—you’ll be the flatwork finisher! Attendees will be divided into groups of 10 each and each group will place and finish a 12 ft x 30 ft slab under the direction of industry recognized flatwork finishers. You’ll receive individual instructions and tips on how to use various hand and power tools including hand-held vibratory-screeds, straight edges, bull floats, bump cutters and walk-behind power trowels. More importantly you’ll learn about the window of finishability and how to read fresh concrete.

Hands-On Training: Stamped Concrete
Code: TUSC1
Date/Time: Tuesday, January 21 | 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Code: WESC1
Date/Time: Wednesday, January 22 | 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Participants will apply the basics of stamped concrete in this hands-on training session. Attendees will place and stamp an actual project consisting of a driveway and sidewalk with a curve. Applying and working with color hardeners and release agents plus how to properly use stamping tools to create various textures including boarders and bands will be experienced. Participants will also practice different jointing and edging techniques for stamped concrete as well as washing, cleaning and sealing. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to create the look of slate or brick by doing it yourself! This hands-on event is a great compliment to seminar TU16 The Basics of Stamped Concrete: Texturing Options and Efficiencies.

IMPORTANT: Minimum age 18 years. Clothing requirements: long pants, long shirt sleeves and work boots. Safety equipment will be provided.

Hands-On Training: Surveying with Total Stations
Codes: TUSTS1 / TUSTS2
Date/Time: Tuesday, January 21 | 7:30 am - 12:00 pm / 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm

This hands-on training session will explain the basic workings of digital total stations used in surveying with special focus on accuracies, errors, instrumental calibration and minor adjustments. Instrumental, personal, natural random and systematic errors will be discussed along with procedures for avoiding common pitfalls such as measuring angles and distances. Attendees will be subdivided into small groups to demonstrate/practice the following: instrument setup, layout calibration setup and proper handling and care of equipment. Attendees will set-up a total station over a specific point using the 5-step method as well as learn to measure distances and horizontal/vertical (zenith) angles properly.

1: Classroom setting
•    Discuss the basic operations of total stations in surveying
•    Recognize the cause of many errors using total stations
•    Identify which total station errors are avoidable with proper field technique
•    Analyze the process of checking and calibrating common total station features

2: Small Groups will demonstrate
•    Instrument set-up
•    Layout calibration set-up
•    Proper handling and care of instrument
•    Set-up a total station over a specific point using the 5-step method

3: Small Groups will practice
•    Measure distances and horizontal and vertical (zenith) angles
•    Use angles and distances to lay out a specific point

NOTE: Space is limited, so register early!
